Market Linkages: German Buyers Explore Uganda's Thriving Organic Coffee Sector

Strengthening market linkages remains a key priority for the National Organic Agricultural Movement of Uganda (NOGAMU).

On Friday, March 6, 2026, a delegation of German coffee buyers visited Uganda to explore sourcing opportunities in the country’s growing organic coffee sector. Accompanied by Mr. Farid Karama, NOGAMU, Global Market Advisor, the team traveled to the Mbale region in Eastern Uganda, where Uganda’s Mount Elgon region is widely recognized for producing high-quality Arabica coffee, grown in rich volcanic soils at high altitudes, which contribute to the distinctive flavor profiles sought by international buyers.

While there, they observed how coffee is grown, processed and organized at a farmer level. They also gained insights into the impact of cooperative structures on improving farmer livelihoods, demonstrating how organized farmer networks can create a more competitive and sustainable organic sector.

The buyers directly engaged with producers from the Mount Elgon Coffee and Honey Cooperative, a cooperative that brings together smallholder farmers to produce and market high-quality coffee collectively.
The visit highlighted Uganda’s smallholder-based production systems, strong farmer networks that ensure quality and traceability and the role of cooperative structures in improving farmer livelihoods. It was encouraging to see farmers benefit from working together by strengthening their bargaining power, improving quality standards and accessing better markets.

At NOGAMU, we emphasize the importance of connecting farmers directly to global markets to build a stronger and more sustainable organic sector. By providing farmers with standards, market knowledge and global connections, we can enhance the value chain, making it more rewarding for both producers and buyers. NOGAMU looks forward to strengthening these partnerships and creating more global opportunities for Uganda’s organic producers.
