NATIONAL ORGANIC BILL IN PROGRESS

Update from the Organic Bill Consultative Stakeholders Meeting

“The question whether Uganda can engage in large scale organic agriculture no longer stands.” stated Chariton Namuwoza, CEO of NOGAMU, in his opening remarks at the National Consultative Meeting on the Organic Agriculture Bill. Multiple government officials, as well as a diverse array of non-state actors in the organic agriculture sector came together on Wednesday the 12th of July at the Sheraton Hotel to discuss the formulation of the Organic Agriculture Bill. This Bill will be crucial in operationalizing the recent National Organic Agriculture Policy put forth by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries in December of 2019. The energy in the room was vibrant as multiple stakeholders discussed what considerations to prioritize in the upcoming Organic Agricultural Bill.

A central theme conveyed in the consultative meeting was that Uganda has huge potential in organic sector. Uganda’s economy is primarily agricultural; it has the 4th most certified organic farms as well as the 2nd most certified organic farmers globally. While the value of organic exports from Uganda has surpassed 159 million dollars, Uganda’s global market share is only 5%. NOGAMU is the organization at the center of the organic agricultural sector, connecting farmers, processors and state representatives to facilitate the sustainable growth of the sector.

Given the recent progress on this crucial bill, the future is bright for organic agriculture in Uganda. As Crop Production Commissioner, MAAIF Mr. Alex Lwakuba stated “through organic agriculture, we can grow food and we can leave the environment healthy for our children”. Commissioner John Okiror shared with the stakeholders the process required to draft and finalize the bill.

The Guest of honour, the 3rd deputy Prime Minister Hon. Rukia Isanga Nakadama reassured the stakeholders that government is supportive of the Organic Bill and its drafting is timely for both our heath and economic growth of the country. She thanked NOGAMU, partners and all stakeholders for the commitment they have shown towards improving the agricultural sector.
